Downpour

8:00 am

“Isaac…” Luna cheerfully giggles, “Where are you taking me?”

“Just a little further Luna, don’t rush me.” Isaac leads Luna through a forest trail outside of the city of La Crème, blindfolding her so that she doesn’t see the surprise he has in store for her.

“As much as I love going on walks with you, it’s getting harder with a baby inside me.” Isaac stops Luna and moves behind her. He unravels the blindfold covering her eyes; revealing that he led her to the top of a hill that overlooked the castle of La Crème.

“Isaac… this is beautiful…” Luna turns around and sees Isaac knelt on one knee. She covers her mouth as she gasped.

“Luna Weiss, I don’t really know how to propose and this may seem a bit cheesy; but since we’ll be starting our family soon, I don’t see why I haven’t done this sooner. So will you, Luna, marry-” The cacophony of metal disrupts their moment. Isaac and Luna turn their attention to a panting soldier behind them.

“Sir… We’ve received word of a barbarian camp nearing La Crème from the Broken Ridge. The king asks that you see to them.” The soldier walks over to Isaac with a letter, the king’s orders in full detail. Isaac turns around and looks at Luna with apologetic eyes.

“Go take care of them; you can ask me later. I’m not going anywhere.” Luna smiles softly, understanding the situation. Isaac embraces her carefully.

“I’ll be back before sundown.” Isaac follows the soldier back to the city.

11:43 pm

Rain pours heavily on the city of La Crème. As the evening nears midnight, the guards outside the city gates raise the bridge. As the soldiers grabbed the level, the loud neigh of a horse breaks through the downpour. The soldiers hold off raising the bridge, spotting a horse galloping with a wounded man. The horse crosses the bridge and stops at the entrance, the man falling onto the ground. The soldiers recognize the wounded warrior, Isaac BeninJerys. “Sir, are you alright?” The soldier help Isaac to his feet, revealing his torn breastplate covered in blood.

“T-take me… to my wife…” Isaac falls onto his knees as he tries a step.

“Sir, what happened?” The soldier asked as they frantically helped Isaac back to his feet.

“They ambushed the squad… fifty or so… from… the Cliffside…” Isaac slowly took his steps as the soldiers supported him. “I’m… the only one who made it out… But… their leader escaped…”

The town clock strikes midnight as Isaac arrives at the front of his door. Pushing the soldiers aside, Isaac collapsed through the door, the sound of the rain replaced with the cries of a child. Isaac looks up at Jonathan, a neighbor from the house next door, with his wife Emily in front of a bed with a white sheet over someone. Emily cradles another white sheet in her arms as Jonathan runs over to Isaac and carries him to his feet. Jonathan looks over at the soldiers and nods, the soldiers closing the door and making their way to deliver the news to the king.

“In Pelor’s name Isaac, what happened…?” Jonathan asked as he held Isaac up.

“L-Luna… where’s Luna…” Isaac asked as he mustered strength to speak. Jonathan and Emily slowly lowered their heads. Tears begin to fall from Isaac’s eyes. “W-Where is she…?”

Emily walks over to Isaac, revealing the crying child she cradles. “You’re a father now Isaac… Meet Luke… Luna named him before…”

Isaac falls onto his knees as tears flow from his eyes. All of his strength leaves his body as he cries heavily on the floor. Rain pours heavily on the town of La Crème.
