===== Origins =====

There was once a sad, black swan who was alone in a battlefield. She cried to the depths for salvation, and the weakness in her heart bore a single, deadened tree. Its roots reached deep into the barren earth, and it stood firm and unyielding even in the fiercest wind, though its branches bore no fruit. The bark twisted about the black swan, surrounding her until she was protected, but trapped.

The roots began to reach further and further, twining and curling across the ground despite its deadened state. The fruitless tree stretched downward into the soil, cracked past the hardened ground, eager to take hold of the land and suffocate the life from the world beyond the old battlefield.

A white swan, noble and handsome, began to pick and snap at the growing roots. “This tree is evil,” it said, its pure white wings fluttering with protest.

However, a little duckling waddled closer. She lifted herself aloft upon her yellow feathers and perched her webbed feet upon the gnarled wood. She picked her way carefully among the prickly branches, searching for a way to reach what was trapped inside.

“Why,” she said, “this tree may grow in evil, but the seed isn’t bad at all!”

===== Destined =====

Once, there was a dog, a duckling, a hawk, and a ram. The dog was forever loyal and good-natured, with only the best interests of others in mind. The duckling was simple, but nurturing and sweet. The hawk was impulsive, yet strong and sharp. And the ram was steadfast and ever by his companions’ side...
